WHAT ROLE DOES ART PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Art is a positive way for me to escape the negative prison environment.
Art is an escape for me from the negativity or prison life. It allows me to channel my energy in a therapeutic sense.
Why do you use the medium you use?
I typically use pencil and colored pencil but I also like to use chalk and pastels because it's easier to shade and create depth.
What inspires you to create?
I love color and like to create bright pieces and life in general is what inspires me whether its good or bad, happy or sad.

IDENTITY STATEMENT
Before incarceration, I saw myself as a caregiver and a loving and present mom. My passion was my nursing career and helping people, and also spending time with my family, who always made me feel loved and that my life had worth, especially my grandparents. After my incarceration, my family has continued to love and support me but due to the trauma I experienced and then going to prison, I had a hard time seeing my worth. My identity because OID #238357 - an inmate, an offender, a prisoner. During my twelve years of incarceration, what I’ve come to realize is that the strong, hard-working, loving, kind, God-fearing, family oriented foundation that my identity was built on is still there and I want to acknowledge my grandma (Granny K), who passed during my incarceration for instilling that in me. I could always count on her to support and encourage my relationship with God, which I will be eternally grateful for because with my renewed relationship with Jesus Christ, I’ve been able to step into the light again and see that I’m enough, I am loved and that my life still has worth.

Transformation Statement
I've been incarcerated for 10 1/2 years and I'm so thankful that I have been transformed spiritually. Prison life can be so dark and negative at times and the only way that I could find light was through God. God has helped me fight through the trauma of my past and the shame of coming to prison. I know I will continue to have trials and tribulations but with the love and strength of Christ I will continue to move forward and not let the evil one crush my spirit. Only with Jesus have I been able to find freedom and peace in prison. On the left side of my drawing is the darkness that try to steal my joy and bring
