Flower Girl by Darryl Kent Headbird, Jr

Pen, colored pencils

Meet the Artist: Darryl Ken Headbird, Jr.

Inspiration:

I wanted to do a piece in honor of the "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls" day of May 5th, because women are sacred. I had no one's photo, or their family's permission to use their picture for this piece, so I used "Aerith" from Final Fantasy VIII, because she fights for the environment. Inawendiwin (relationships), Manaaji'idiwin (respect), Miigiwe'idiwin (reciprocity).

What role does art play in your life?

Art is life. From image, sound, taste, smell and feel. We do not live in a void without art of some kind. Art is creativity, and he Creator made us with that same spirit of creation. Imagine if "Purple Rain" was never released. What would the world be like without that beautiful song? Make your music heard.

Justice statement:

I believe "Justice" is doing what is right, or to attempt to repair the harm done in injustice. To that end, I wanted to use my art to bring awareness to the "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls" of our nation, because women are sacred. I wanted to use someone's photograph in the piece, but I did not have permission to do so. Thus, I used "Aerith" from Final Fantasy VIII, because she fights for the environment. As I want to honor our environmental warriors as well.

Miigwech (thank you)
